Post game quotes: Cal vs UC Davis, First Round, WNIT
March 17, 2010
"Very happy about the win. I am glad that we fought like we did in the second half and made some adjustments, mostly rebounding. They are a great team and we had to fight hard to get it."
"I think the two sitting next to me (Layshia Clarendon and Gennifer Brandon), both of them. Genn had 19 (points) and 21 (rebounds). It is hard. She played 37 minutes. It was hard to go with one post player the entire game. There were times when she was exhausted. Luckily, the time outs came accordingly and she got a little bit of rest. She just had to suck it up and she did a great job with points and rebounds."
"I wasn't getting anything from my posts, other than Genn, so I wasn't going to just lay down and give them the game. Whoever was going to show up and play hard was who was going to be out there. I thought Lauren (Greif) did a great job on (Paige Mintun). She is a traditional post, so for Lauren to play that kid the whole game, that was really tiring and difficult. But she did a great job and allowed other people to get easy looks. You never want to go into a game shorthanded like that, especially with Lexi (Alexis Gray-Lawson) being out, we went even more shorthanded tonight."
On what was different the second half from the first
"They packed it in until the very end. In the beginning, they were trapping and we just sort of picked it apart. In the second half, they didn't come out and trap until they were down and were trying to come back. They sat in that and made us shoot outside shots. We didn't get the looks we were getting early in. And then when we were going with four guards, it was hard because it is not natural for our guards to have to be in the post position and weave an entry there, so we were just trying to run a cutter offense. After awhile I thought we settled down and got Genn some touches. And she finished. And that was good for us."
"This was a tough, physical game for us. It was short prep time on this end, but gives us some good rest time on the other end, and gives us a chance to get Lexi back. And just get our legs back under us."
"Davis is a hard prep for a day. We had one day to prepare for the Princeton offense. Other than defending the three, I thought we did a good job understanding the Princeton offense. The kids bought in and understood what we need to do."
On the chances that Alexis Gray-Lawson will play on Tuesday
"Good. I think. She took her concussion test this afternoon and she wasn't that far off. But you are never going to risk if she is not where she needs to be. If she were way off on her marks, I would say probably not. But she is really close, so I think so."
Freshman guard Layshia Clarendon
"I would say that we were happy and blessed with another opportunity to keep playing. We really should have been done after not making the (NCAA) Tournament. We set new goals and just kind of put the NCAA behind us and live for today by taking the opportunity that we have."
"I definitely felt I needed to take more of the scoring load. Lexi was all over me the last couple of days."
"Our new team goal is there is no such thing as tired anymore. It's one and done. Genn had a headache, and we told her forget about it, worry about it later. There are no excuses at all."
On what Alexis Gray-Lawson was like sitting on the bench
"She was like 'win, so I can play again'!"
Freshman forward Gennifer Brandon
"I was really excited to play this game. It was my first post season game. I just tried to play hard and stay focused. Our team came together before, we had a meeting and put it all out there and decided we wanted to play for the seniors."
