Cal Hosts Men's Water Polo Spring Tourney

BERKELEY - The California men's water polo program will be hosting an eight-team tournament this weekend - the 2012 Men's Water Polo Spring Cup - April 21-22. Saturday's competition will be held at Acalanes High School in Lafayette, but Sunday's matches will be contested at Cal's Spieker Aquatics Complex, beginning at 8 a.m. until the end of the championship match that is slated to start at 5:15 p.m.

The tournament field consists of defending national champions USC, Stanford, UC Irvine and Air Force in Bracket A. Bracket B will be UCLA, Cal, Pacific and UC Santa Barbara. For the tournament schedule click on Cal Spring Cup Get Acrobat Reader

Head coach Kirk Everist's Bears finished the 2011 campaign 22-4 overall and 7-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Cal's four losses last season were all by one goal, including 7-6 in overtime to UCLA in the Nov. 26 MPSF Tournament semifinals in Los Angeles. The Bears also fell 6-5 to UCLA Sept. 18 in the semifinals of the NorCal Tournament in Stockton, 10-9 in overtime to Stanford Oct. 2, and 9-8 in sudden death overtime to USC Oct. 15 at Cal.

Cal returns three All-Americans from the 2011 squad for the 2012 campaign next fall - senior goalie Justin Parsons (second team), junior attacker Collin Smith (honorable mention) and sophomore attacker Aleksa Saponjic (honorable mention).
