BERKELEY, Calif. - California is ranked No. 18 in this week's Associated Press Top 25 Poll, signifying the Golden Bears' highest ranking in the 31-year history of the national poll.
After defeating Saint Mary's, 71-56, in Sunday's season opener, Cal climbed three spots from its preseason ranking. Cal's previous best ranking by the Associated Press was No. 20 in the first poll of the 1982-83 season (Nov. 18, 1982).
The WBCA-USA Today-ESPN Coaches' Poll has the Bears listed at No. 21 in its preseason rankings, which equals the program's high point in that poll. The first regular-season poll hasn't been announced yet.
Cal travels to the Timeout for AIDS/HIV Tournament Nov. 17-18 in Malibu, Calif. The Bears open the tournament against Florida Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. PT, and then face either No. 14 Rutgers or host Pepperdine Nov. 18. The entire field competed in the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
