Oct. 19, 2007

STANFORD, Calif. - The California women's tennis team began play on the courts of the Taube Family Tennis Stadium at the 2007 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional tournament today in Stanford, Calif. Seven Golden Bears advanced to the round of 32 in singles play including top-seeded senior Susie Babos. Three Cal doubles teams also played well enough to make their way into the round of 16, with two of those duos meeting each other for the right to advance to the final eight.

In the round of 128, four out of six Cal entries eased their way into the next stage, all winning in straight sets. Junior Bojana Bobusic had the easiest time in her match, winning 6-0, 6-0 against Fresno State's Elizabeth McFeeters. Junior Daron Moore and freshman Bobbie Englert weren't as fortunate as their Bear counterparts, falling to their first round opponents; but each will participate in the consolation singles flight beginning Saturday morning.

The Bears continued to experience success in the round of 64, with every Cal player winning in straight sets, only one of which gave up more than four games in any given set. Senior Marion Ravelojaona lost her first set but eventually retired from her match due to an injury.

In doubles play, all three Cal teams without byes advanced to the second round. In round two, the duo of Babos and senior Stephanie Kusano defeated UC Davis' Kaitlin Callan and Andrea Phillips 8-0. However, the teams of Englert/Moore and Ravelojaona/Visico were eliminated from play. Eighth-seeded pair junior Claire Ilcinkas and freshman Marina Cossou defeated their Santa Clara opponent and will meet teammates Bobusic and freshman Rachael Dillon in the round of 16. Bobusic/Dillon defeated Fresno State's Vanessa Heroux and Bruna Paes 8-4 in order to advance.

There are a total of eight regional qualifying tournaments throughout the country that determine the field of participants for the ITA National Indoor Championships held in Columbus, Ohio from Nov. 1-4. The two singles finalists and the doubles champion emerging from this weekends' play will earn berths into the ITA National Indoor Championships. In addition to host school Stanford and Cal, this regional includes top players from the following Northwest region schools: Cal Poly, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Nevada, Oregon, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara, UC Davis, Washington and Washington State.

Play continues on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. For complete schedule, draw and results, please visit www.GoStanford.com and click on women's tennis or visit www.tennislink.usta.com
