SEATTLE, Wash. -

The No. 11 California women's tennis team (6-2, 2-0 Pac-10) defeated No. 43 Washington (8-3, 0-2) in a 5-2 win at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash. today. The victory gives the Golden Bears a 2-0 start in Pac-10 Conference play. Senior Stephanie Kusano's 6-2, 6-1 win on court five over Kelsey Anonsen clinched the win for the Bears, who have now defeated the Huskies in the teams' last three meetings.

In doubles play against the Huskies, the No. 53 ranked duo of seniors Kusano and Susie Babos earned Cal the doubles point with their 8-5 win over Joyce Ardies and Tara Simpson. Earlier on court three, junior Bojana Bobusic and freshman Rachael Dillon got together to defeat Washington's team of Aleksandra Malovic and Vanja Radunovic. On court two, the French duo of freshman Marina Cossou and junior Claire Ilcinkas suffered their first dual match loss, falling 8-6 to Anonsen and Husky freshman Venise Chan.

Coming off the final doubles win, senior No. 7 Babos had little time to get ready for her match on court No. 1, falling in a 6-0, 6-1 defeat to last week's Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week, Chan. The Husky win tied the team points at one point apiece. No. 52 Cossou broke the tie, finishing off Aleksandra Malovic 6-2, 6-2 on court two. Junior No. 87 Bobusic built Cal's lead to 3-1 when she got a 6-3, 6-0 win on court six over Melinda Wong. Kusano stepped up next to claim the team victory for the Bears on court five. With the match decided, junior No. 83 Ilcinkas got a 6-4, 6-3 win against Joyce Ardies.

Senior No. 41 Cristina Visico got a 6-2 first set win on court three but allowed Simpson to come back for a 7-5 win in the second to knot things up at one set each. Going to a tiebreaker for the third set, the players went back and forth, trading match points until Simpson put together two winners in a row to stop Visico at 14. The Washington win gave the Huskies their second point of the day, but the Bears prevailed with the 5-2 win overall.

The Bears remain on the road next week, visiting No. 12 USC and No. 7 UCLA on Friday and Saturday respectively. Please check CalBears.com for up-to-date information and statistics.
