SAN DIEGO, Calif. - In one of the closest races of the regatta, the No. 2 California Golden Bears put together a very fast race, but it wasn't enough to win their eighth straight Copley Cup. Both Cal and No. 4 Stanford got out to fast starts, but after 1,000 meters the Cardinal had a two-second lead. The Bears fought hard but couldn't capture the lead. Stanford defeated Cal by two seconds. The Cal B boat followed behind nine seconds later and Purdue was 20 seconds out of the lead.

In the JV grand final, the Bears took a commanding lead from the start, leading their B boat by three seconds and UC Davis by six seconds after the first 500 meters. The race ended with the Cal A three seconds ahead of the Cal B boat and 25 seconds ahead of UC Davis.

Cal's freshmen eight rowed to an open water victory over Stanford and Orange Coast College. The Bears held a one-second lead after 500 meters, but they opened this lead to four seconds going into the last 500 meters. The Bears finished ahead of Stanford, Orange Coast College and Oregon State by six, seven and 10 seconds respectively.

The Bears next race at the Stanford Invitational April 14-15 at Redwood Shores.
