TRIESTE, Italy - Today was the most interesting day of our Italian tour for the Cal men's basketball team. Our first two games we jumped out to early leads, scored over 100 points and won the games by large margins with little resistance.
Word must have travelled to Team Trieste that the team from California was here to "ball." The game was set in the beautiful rolling hills of Trieste. We had a good warm up. I noticed that there was no air conditioning. We also noticed that this team was much bigger and looked physically stronger. The coaching staff had advised us that this game and the remaining games would be very competitive.
From the opening moments of the game, we knew that the game was going to be hard fought and physical. Richard hit some early shots to get us going. Our opponent didn't seem to like that we were getting into a "flow." We were running the break, sharing the rock, running our sets, defending and rebounding.
The Italian team responded by playing very physical. We continued to play the game the correct way until we all knew it was time to push back. Although we increased our lead to 30 something, we kept playing hard and competitive, which was one of our pre-game goals. One of our goals on this trip was to bond. And on this day, the young Bear team came together in an afternoon of basketball that none of us will ever forget.
And by the way, the final score was Bears 99, Trieste 66.
Next step - Lake Como... GO BEARS!
