AUSTIN, Texas - Third-ranked California qualified five individual Golden Bears for tonight's A finals at this morning's preliminaries on the second day of the Texas Invitational at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Freshman David Russell had the best finish for Cal, which stands in third place at the Texas Invitational with 174 points, on Friday morning. He took fifth place in the 100-yard backstroke in an NCAA consideration qualifying time of 48.83. Senior Henrique Barbosa had Cal's next best finish, swimming an NCAA consideration qualifying time of 55.50 to take sixth place in the 100-yard breaststroke and join Russell in the finals.
Junior teammate Graham Lentz was right behind Barbosa, placing seventh in a time of 55.73 in the 100 breast. Cal sophomore Louis Vayo took eighth place in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 3:55.71. Cal sophomore diver Javier Rivas took sixth place on the one-meter springboard to become the fifth Bear to qualify for tonight's finals, which begin at 6 p.m. CT.
