SUNNYVALE, Calif. - The No. 6/7 California softball team picked up a 7-1 win against Santa Clara and had its second game against Colorado State interrupted by rain Saturday at the NIST Tournament. The Golden Bears (16-2) will conclude their game against the Rams Sunday at 9 a.m. The score was tied at 1-1 in the fifth inning before the game was called due to rain.

In Game 1, senior Kristina Thorson improved to 10-2 after holding the Broncos to two hits while striking out 16. Freshman Gina Leomiti sparked the Bears' offense with a three-run triple in the fourth.

Cal also tallied one run in both the fifth and sixth innings and two in the seventh.

Leomiti got things going for Cal with her three-run triple with two outs in the fourth inning. Emily Friedman, freshman Carly Winger and sophomore Katie Vickers all scored. Winger and Vickers had reached base after walks, and Friedman reached base after getting hit by a pitch.

Winger also scored in the fifth on an RBI single from junior Alex Sutton. Sophomore Julie Meyer hit a solo home run in the sixth for the inning's only run.

The Bears rounded out their scoring in the seventh inning with Winger scoring again on an RBI single from Sutton. Friedman scored her second run of the game on an RBI single from Vickers.

Sutton finished 2-for-3. Leomiti was 2-for-3, while Winger was 1-for-3 with three runs.

Santa Clara took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
