O'Neil wins 200 fly prelim at Pac-10 Championships

LONG BEACH, Calif. - California sophomore Patrick O'Neil won the 200-yard butterfly preliminary in a time of 1:44.00 on Day 4 of the 2005 Pac-10 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships held this morning at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. In all, eleven Golden Bears qualified for the finals tonight, which mark the completion of this year's conference meet.

Cal's 11 qualifiers are listed below in bold.

The Bears are in second place, with 575 points, behind first-place Stanford (643.5).

O'Neil's time is the second fastest 200 fly in Cal history. It also is O'Neil's career best in the event and is an automatic NCAA qualifying time.

Senior teammate Caleb Rowe took second in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:56.38, which is also the second fastest time in that event in school history and is an automatic NCAA qualifying time.

Other highlights for Cal include senior Duje Draganja's second-place finish in the 100 freestyle (43:12, NCAA A) and freshman Mark Eckert's third-place finish (1:45.01, NCAA B) in the 200 backstroke.

The finals begin at 6 p.m. tonight.
