Honolulu, Hawaii - No. 4 California opened the Hawaii Softball Invitational today with wins over No. 21 Texas, 7-1, and Utah, 8-3. Senior Kelly Anderson pitched eight shutout innings in the two contests, while sophomore Lindsay James hit safely in each game to improve her hitting streak to 28 games.
After Kristina Thorson navigated her way through the Texas lineup in the top of the first, the Golden Bears took command of their battle with the Longhorns in the bottom half.
Vicky Galindo led off with a walk and promptly stole second. James was hit by a pitch and the Bears were in business with their table setters on base. Staying aggressive, Diane Ninemire used the double steal and it worked to perfection as both runners moved up and scored on two Texas errors. Kaleo Eldredge walked and stole second and scored on a Chelsea Spencer single, followed by another Longhorn miscue on the field. Roni Rodrigues accounted for the final run with a double down the left field line scoring Spencer.
Thorson cruised through four innings, allowing only three hits, one of which was a solo home run in the fourth, as she improved her record to 13-0.
The Bears strung together another big inning in the bottom of the fourth, by way of the big hit this time. With the bases loaded, James found the left center field gap for a bases-clearing double.
Anderson took the hill with a six-run lead and held her ground with three innings of two-hit ball to close things out.
The Bears' bats picked up where they left off against Utah. Cal strung together two runs in the first, three in the second and two more in the third to take control of the contest.
Cal put the pressure on, loading the bases in the first. When Spencer was hit by a pitch, the first run was forced home. A wild pitch, allowed Haley Woods to scamper home for a 2-0 Bears' advantage.
The bottom of the second saw Galindo begin a two-out rally with a double. James reached on an error that scored Galindo. Eldredge and Woods both followed with RBI singles to pad the Bears' lead to 5-0.
In the third, the Bears' continued to get clutch two-out hits. Galindo's two-run double gave Anderson a 8-0 lead.
Anderson went on to pitch five innings, allowing four hits and striking out four. She improved her record to 17-3.
The fireworks weren't over for the Bears though. Woods turned on a pitch in the sixth a sent it over the wall in center for her 11th home run of the season. She has now homered in five of her last eight games.
Cal continues Hawaii Invitational play on Friday when it takes on Nittaidai (Japan) at 1 p.m.
