IRVINE, Calif. - California sophomore Caitlin Leverenz and three former Golden Bears - Natalie Coughlin, Dana Vollmer and Madison Kennedy - qualified for the U.S. women's team that will compete in the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships by posting strong performances at the recently completed 2010 ConocoPhillips National Championships. Cal head coach Teri McKeever will serve as the U.S. women's head coach at the Pan Pacific Championships, which will take place from Aug. 18-22 in Irvine at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center, which also hosted the national championships.
Vollmer captured the 100-meter freestyle title with a time of 53.94 on Aug. 7, the final day of the long-course national meet. Leverenz claimed the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:35.60 on Aug. 5 and Coughlin clocked a time of 1:00.14 to win the 100-meter backstroke on Aug. 4. Kennedy qualified for the Pan Pacific meet in the 50 free, after the Avon, Conn., product took second place in the sprint final with a time of 25.15.
Besides the 100 free, Vollmer is also slated to swim 100 butterfly and the 200 free at Pan Pacs, after taking second in both events at nationals. The Granbury, Texas, native posted a time of 57.45 in the 100 fly on Aug. 3, the first day of nationals, and recorded a time of 1:56.93 in the 200 free on Aug. 4.
Leverenz will also compete in the 200 IM at Pan Pacs; the Tucson, Ariz., product finished second in a time of 2:10.84 on Aug. 3. Coughlin, who hails from Lafayette, Calif., may compete in the 100 free at Pan Pacs, as she finished third in the event in a time of 54.34 at nationals.
The Bears swam as members of the California Aquatics club at nationals, and the club won the 4x100-free relay with the quartet of Kennedy, senior Erica Dagg, senior Katherine Raatz and junior Liv Jensen notching a time of 3:44.87 on Aug. 3.
Other notable Cal swims at nationals included Coughlin in the 100 fly (4th in 58.31), senior Amanda Sims in the 100 fly (10th, 59.31), Vollmer in the 50 free (tied for 4th, 25.32), Jensen in the 50 free (17th/won the bonus final, 25.61), Kennedy in the 100 free (19th, 55.71), Leverenz in the 200 breaststroke (6th, 2:28.58), California Aquatics (Raatz, senior Katie Kastes, senior Erica Dagg and Jensen) in the 4x200 free relay (9th, 8:20.89) and California Aquatics (Dagg, Leverenz, Sims and Jensen) in the 4x100 medley relay (5th, 4:11.49).
