BERKELEY - Forward Andrew Wiedeman scored in the 49th minute to give No. 6/7 California a 1-0 victory over No. 17/20 Stanford in their first Pac-10 Conference game of the season on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears improved their record to 7-2-0 (1-0-0 Pac-10) in front of a crowd of 1,320, Cal's largest regular-season home attendance since Kevin Grimes has been the Bears' head coach (2000 season). Stanford fell to 6-2-0 (0-1).
The last time Edwards Stadium held a larger crowd for a Cal men's soccer game was in 2007, when 3,479 watched as the Bears eliminated UC Davis, 2-1, in overtime in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
On Friday, Stanford outshot Cal, 12-7, in a tight match between the two rivals. Cal sophomore goalkeeper David Bingham made five saves to earn the shutout in his return after a one-game absence. Stanford goalie John Moore made two saves in the loss.
In the 19th minute, Wiedeman had a chance to score when Moore left his six-yard box, but the junior's shot from a tough angle went wide.
Forward Daniel Leon came close to notching a goal for Stanford in the 32nd minute, but his shot hit the crossbar.
Wiedeman's team-leading ninth-goal of the season, assisted by senior forward Jeff Cosgriff, gave Cal a 1-0 lead early in the second half on Cal's only shot of the second half. The Cardinal outshot Cal, 4-1, in the final 45 minutes.
Of Stanford's four second-half shots, Bingham saved shots by Dominique Yahyavi in the 56th minute and Leon in the 74th minute, Cal freshman defender Steve Birnbaum blocked an Adam Jahn blast from the top of the penalty box in the 87th minute, and Bingham made a diving save of a Cameron Lamming effort 40 seconds from the end of the game.
Cal plays the Cardinal again in its final regular-season game on Nov. 14 in Stanford, Calif.
The Bears host a pair of Pac-10 opponents next week - Washington at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 9, and Oregon State at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct.11 - at Edwards Stadium.
