Berkeley - Cal junior linebacker Sekou Sanyika earned second team All-America honors as named by Football News today. The publication named three teams in its Dec. 5 edition.
The 6-3, 235-pound junior had a sensational season as he was credited with 23 tackles behind the line of scrimmage to lead the Pacific-10 in that category. He ended the season with 55 tckles, including 40 unassisted stops. He also recorded a pair of safeties and forced two fumbles on the season.
The first team linebackers were Jevon Kearse of Florida, Jeff Kelly of Kansas State, Dat Nguyen of Texas A&M and Crhis Claiborne of USC. Joining Sanyika on the second team were linebackers LaVar Arrington of Penn State and Barry Gardner of Northwestern. The third team linebackers were Andy Katzenmoyer of Ohio State, Roderick Coleman of East Carolina, Dustin Cohen of Miami of Ohio and Wali Rainer of Virginia.
Other Pac-10 selections on the Football News All-America teams were cornerback Chris McAlister of Arizona and Kris Farris of UCLa, who both made the first team. ASU offensive lineman Grey Ruegamer made the second team along with guard Yusuf Scott of Arizona, placekicker Nathan Villegas of Oregon, punter Josh Bidwell of Oregon, cornerback Daylon McCutcheon of USC and safety Larry Atkins of UCLA. On the third team was Oregon tight end Jed Weaver.
