BERKELEY, Calif. - CollegeSwimming.com named California junior Jonas Tilly its male National Swimmer of the Week after he won two individual races and anchored four winning relays for the Golden Bears at a tri-meet with Texas and Florida last week. The product of Trelleborg, Sweden, is coming off an All-American sophomore season in which he swam on Cal's NCAA champion 200- and 400-yard freestyle relays and earned honorable mention All-American honors in the 50 and 100 freestyles.
At the tri-meet held last Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22, in Austin, Texas, Tilly won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.37 and the 100 freestyle in an NCAA B standard qualifying time of 44.44. He anchored the winning 200-free relay (1:20.36), 400-free relay (2:59.01), 200-medley relay (1:30.21) and 400-medley relay (3:16.94). Tilly also took second in the 100 butterfly (49.07) and led off Cal's seventh-place 800-free relay (6:54.46) in Texas. The Bears (2-0) won 11 out of 20 events to defeat the host Longhorns, 208-162, and the Gators, 247-123.
Cal returns to action at the Pacific Tiger Invitational this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28-29, in Stockton, Calif.
