Berkeley, Calif. - The Cal women's tennis team (5-1) dropped its first match of the season today in its Pac-10 opener against Stanford, 7-0.
In doubles, Christina Fusano and Jieun Jacobs held off a late rally by Stanford's duo of Tokuda/Tweedie-Yates, defeating them 9-8 (11-9). With the win, although the Cardinal took the doubles point, the Bears took the momentum heading into the singles portion of the afternoon. But the weather would not cooperate, and many of the Cal faithful who saw the Bears open up leads on five of the six singles courts were driven away by mother nature.
After the rain delay held up singles for nearly two hours, Raquel Kops-Jones put on a show for those who arrived late from the Cal men's basketball win over USC, performing at a high level in a tough match against fourth-ranked Lauren Kalvavia. Kops-Jones fought hard, taking many of her games to extra points. Likewise for sophomores Nicole Havlicek and Catherine Lynch, who kept their courts tight throughout the day.
The Bears continue their four-match homestand next weekend, taking on San Diego State on Friday at 1:30, and then meeting Oregon at noon on Saturday. Both matches will take place in Berkeley at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
