BERKELEY - The Cal baseball team (16-19), whose three of its last four losses have been by one run, will look to get back on the winning track when it hosts San Francisco (20-15) in a non-conference game, Tuesday, April 16 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. Last weekend, the Golden Bears fell to No. 7 Oregon in a three-game Pac-12 series - 3-2, 10-4 and 5-4.
The Golden Bears have been led offensively by junior catcher Andrew Knapp, who is hitting .344 (44-for-128) with a team-leading nine doubles, five home runs and 28 RBI. Knapp, a first-team Preseason All-American in Baseball America, had the big hit last Sunday versus Oregon, blasting a three-run homer in the eighth inning to get Cal within, 5-4, of the highly ranked Ducks.
San Francisco is slated to start freshman left-hander Thomas Cox (1-0, 1.10 ERA, nine strikeouts in 16.1 innings) Tuesday. The Dons just completed a three-game sweep of Santa Clara last weekend at Schott Stadium in Santa Clara - 4-3, 5-3, 7-5. The Bears' starter is TBA.
Earlier this season, Cal topped the Dons, 5-2, March 26 at Benedetti Diamond. The Bears were led by junior right fielder Jacob Wark, who was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Sophomore Chris Muse-Fisher picked up his first win of the year in relief, throwing 2.0 innings with no hits, no runs, no walks and five strikeouts. San Francisco native Dylan Nelson earned his second save of the season for the Bears, throwing the final 2.0 innings (two hits, no runs, two strikeouts).
After Tuesday's contest versus USF, the Bears continue their homestand of eight straight games when they host conference foe Washington State, April 19-21, for a three-game Pac-12 series at Evans Diamond. Gametimes for the series are 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday night, and 2 p.m. for Sunday's contest that will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. The WSU-Cal series can also be heard on KNEW 960 AM and KALX 90.7 FM.
