BERKELEY - The No. 6/7 California softball team fell 2-0 against visiting No. 8/10 Arizona State, Friday, at Levine-Fricke Field. The Golden Bears are now 37-7 and 5-4 in the Pac-10, while Arizona State is 40-6 and 4-3. Cal hosts No. 3 Arizona Saturday and Sunday, with both games starting at 1 p.m.
Senior Kristina Thorson (26-5) struck out 10 batters in seven innings of work. Senior Haley Woods went 2-for-3 on the day, and freshman Morgan Siegel finished 2-for-4. But Cal was unable to bring home any runs, leaving seven on base.
The Sun Devils scored two runs in the top of the fourth on a single by Ashley Werschky, sending Kaitlin Cochran and Rhiannon Baca home.
The Bears got themselves out of other runners-on situations in the fifth and sixth innings. In the top of the fifth, Jessica Mapes singled and was later caught stealing on a play from Woods (catcher) to freshman shortstop Carly Winger at second base. Thorson got a pop-up to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth, Cochran led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. She was later caught stealing on a play from Woods to Winger at third base. Thorson then struck out Werschky to end the inning.
Saturday is Cal Day at UC Berkeley, which features several events around campus. Fans are advised to get to campus early for the game.
