BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team plays host to 11 different schools over the weekend in the annual Cal Invitational. The first two rounds of play concluded on Friday with four Bears advancing to the quarterfinal round of the Gold Flight. Senior Susie Babos and fellow seniors Stephanie Kusano, Marion Ravelojaona and Cristina Visico are each amongst the final eight players in their singles flight, creating three Cal-Northwestern matchups on day two. All Gold Flight singles quarterfinal matches will be held at noon at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
In the Blue Flight, Cal advances three players to the singles quarterfinal. Redshirt junior Daron Moore and junior Bojana Bobusic are joined by freshman Marina Cossou in their round of eight. Bobusic pulled off the upset of No. 4 seeded Wendy Pilecka from Arizona State to gain entry into the quarterfinal. Freshman Bobbie Englert represents the Bears in the White Flight where she will play for a chance to win the bracket in Sunday's White Flight final.
In doubles play, three Bears duos advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Gold Flight, with no pair allowing their opponent to more than five games. Junior Claire Ilcinkas and Bobusic made short work of their round of 16 opponent, winning 8-1 quickly. In Blue Flight doubles, Ravelojaona and Cossou made the French connection work to their advantage and won by a score 8-3 to advance to the quarterfinal of that doubles bracket.
Play begins on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with doubles matches (singles start at approximately 10 a.m.) and goes until approximately 8 p.m. Sunday's start time is also 8:30 a.m., but matches will conclude in the early afternoon. Matches will be played at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts.
The three-day event includes a singles tournament divided into three flights (Gold, Blue and White with consolation rounds for the Gold and Blue) and a doubles tournament divided into two flights (Gold and Blue). There will also be consolation rounds in each singles flight and an open round robin for eliminated players. Participating teams include host California, Arizona, Arizona State, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Nevada, Northwestern, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, and Santa Clara. Senior Susie Babos won both the singles and doubles tournaments at the 2006 Cal Invitational, helping Cal to a tournament sweep. The Bears success throughout the first two days of the tournament culminated in a Cal vs. Cal final. Babos defeated former teammate Zsuzanna Fodor in the Gold flight (6-4; 6-2) final for the tournament singles title. Fodor and Babos then teamed up to win the doubles title with an 8-0 win over then freshman Nina Henkel and junior Daron Moore.
After the Invitational, the Golden Bears return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 2 in Los Angeles for the All-American. Qualifiers will continue play in the All-American Main Draw from Oct. 4-7.
