Sept. 23, 2010

BERKELEY - The California men's swim team will begin its 2010-11 season this Friday, Sept. 24 through Saturday, Sept. 25 with a non-traditional competition at Cal Poly's Anderson Aquatic Center in San Luis Obispo. Friday's meet features a pentathlon as each of the school's swimmers compete in the 100-yard butterfly, the 100 backstroke, the 100 breaststroke the 100 freestyle and the 100 individual medley. The swimmer with the lowest aggregate time will be crowned the "King of the Pool."

On Saturday, the Golden Bear men will team up with the Cal women for co-ed races in the 200-yard medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

"With the Pentathlon schedule, this gives our guys a great opportunity at the beginning of the year to swim in some different events," said Cal coach David Durden. "It allows Greg (Meehan, assistant coach), Nort (Thornton, head coach emeritus), and myself see some of our new faces race in a multitude of events. The relay meet on Saturday will be a fun time with the women's team. Two Cal men and two Cal women on each relay is something we never have the opportunity to do in our regular competition schedule."

Last March, Durden led the Bears to a second place finish at the 2010 NCAA meet, the best finish for Cal since placing as the national runners-up in 1986 with Matt Biondi. He coached Cal athletes to three individual national crowns (Nathan Adrian in the 100 free, Damir Dugonjic in the 100 breast, Tom Shields in the 100 fly) and four relay national titles (200 and 400 free relays, 200 and 400 medley relays), and was named the 2010 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Coach of the Meet. Cal placed higher than any other Pac-10 school at the NCAA meet, being edge only by Texas, 500-469.5.

This season, the Bears welcome in seven new swimmers - Jeremy Bagshaw, Scott Farley, Shayne Fleming, Greg Harper, Sam Metz, Ryan Studebaker and Marcin Tarczynski. For more information on the Cal men's swimming newcomers click on Cal Men's Swimming 2010-11 Newcomers.

Following the Cal Poly meet, the Bears will next compete at the Pacific Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 16 at 12 p.m. in Stockton, Calif.
