BERKELEY, Calif. --The seventh-ranked California women's tennis team completed a sweep of the Pac-10 Arizona schools today with a victory over No. 23 Arizona, 6-3, and improved their season record to 11-2. The Bears tried to outwit Mother Nature by starting the dual match at the Hellman Tennis Center against Arizona State a half-hour early, but competition was halted after singles play when the rain began to fall. The teams moved inside to the Clubsport facility in Fremont where the Bears finished off the Wildcats with a strong doubles display.

The top three singles matches were closely contested as the Bears competed without their top player, Amanda Agustus, who was ridden with the flu. Esther Knox replaced Agustus at the No. one spot and put forth a valient effort against 44th-ranked Vicky Maes before falling 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. At No. 2, Anita Kurimay rebounded after dropping the first set to win the first three games of the second set, but was unable to force Betsy Meringoff to a third and lost 6-4, 7-6. Amy Jensen overcame a determined Monique Allegre, 6-3,2-6,6-4, to claim a Cal win at No. 3.

The depth of this Cal squad was evident in the victories posted by Stephanie Tibbits, Francesca La'O and Jenny Lee at their respective Nos. 4, 5, and 6 positions. The trio had little trouble with the Wildcats and they all won in straights sets to give Cal a 4-2 advantage going into doubles action.

Knox and Kurimay lost their first doubles match of the season, 8-2, at the No. 2 postition, to end their impressive winning streak at 11 matches. However, the other two Cal doubles teams held off the Wildcats to clinch the Bears' win.

The Bears wrap up their home-stand with a dual match against No. 30 San Diego on Weds., March 18 at the Hellman Tennis Center. Match-time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
