EUGENE, Ore. -
Cal head coach Joanne Boyle
On her team's slow start in the first half
"It's been a pattern for us. We talked to them at halftime about us having a lot of unforced turnovers, which takes away opportunities to score. I felt like we weren't focused at the free throw line. We were 5-for-11, and we didn't do a good job boxing out. Kaela Chapdelaine had four or five offensive rebounds at the half. I thought we were giving them a lot of second chance opportunities. That was the talk at halftime. I felt we did a much better job of those things in the second half. Also with the stops because we were doing a much better job boxing out, we got a lot more transition buckets. A lot of that happened in the first five minutes (of the second half)."
On Cal's defense's role in the game
"It's been our MO all year, our defense and our rebounding. They had a poor shooting night, and maybe, we contributed to that with our defense. Lexi (Gray-Lawson) did a good job early on (Taylor) Lilley and didn't give her any easy looks or open looks. I thought our posts did a good job. I thought Dev's (Hampton's) defense down low was really good."
On the imporance of winning at McArthur Court for the first time in 15 years
"Even though they (this year's team) doesn't have the 15 years of history, there was the 15 years of history at Cal. This team was determined to do something different. There's a checklist of things we haven't gotten done. This is one of them. It's nice to come up here and play well at least in the second half."
Cal guard Alexis Gray-Lawson
On winning at Oregon for the first time in 15 years
"It boosts our confidence going into the Arizona State game. But, you can't be celebrating all night long. Go to the airport, get some sleep and go back to practice on Monday."
Cal forward/center Devanei Hampton
On the difference in the second half
"Our coaches explain it to us every day that defense is going to win us games. Today, she was right."
On the defensive plan to stop Taylor Lilley
"Helping each other out. They set a lot of double screens for the guards. Giving them the extra hedge to give them time to get there is helpful. "
On the rebounding margin Cal held
"Coach spoke about it at halftime. She said get on the boards.Kaela Chapdelaine is a good offensive rebounder. Putting a body on our opponent pushed out the rebounding margin."
