The No. 2 California Golden Bears (19-6, 5-3) lost to No. 3 Stanford (17-5, 6-2), 7-4 in the Big Splash Saturday at the Avery Aquatic Center. Junior Brian Kinsel scored two goals to lead the Golden Bears.
The Cardinal jumped to an early lead with a goal by Tyler Drake 1:40 into the first quarter. Stanford maintained the 1-0 lead heading into the second quarter, but the Bears tied it up at 5:14 in the second. The Cardinal's Michael Bury's shot at 4:42 remaining in the second gave Stanford the lead for good. Stanford's Marcello Pantuliano and Ryan Fortune gave the Cardinal a three goal lead at the end of the second period.
With a 4-1 Stanford advantage, both teams intensified their defensive play in the third quarter. The only goal of the third period came at 2:02 when Cal's Shea Buckner scored, making the score 4-2 Cardinal, entering the final period.
William Hindle-Katel scored the first goal of the fourth quarter with 5:19 remaining, giving Stanford a 5-2 lead. Cal's Tom Kurth then scored at 3:02 off of a stolen pass to bring Cal back within two. Stanford's Peter Varellas scored with 2:27 left, and Hindle-Katel scored with :53 in the fourth quarter. With only 37 seconds remaining in the match, Cal's Brian Kinsel scored bringing the final score to 7-4.
The MPSF tournament is set to begin at 10:00am Friday, November 25, and will run all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Seedings for the tournament will be announced early next week.
