Cal's Brian Kinsel scored off a John Mann assist with 58 seconds left in the second overtime period to give the No. 2 Bears (19-5, 5-2) a 12-11 victory over No. 8 Long Beach State (15-14, 0-6) Sunday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. It was the second time this season Cal has won a one-goal match over the 49ers, defeating Long Beach State 9-8 in the second round of the NorCal Open at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
In the first period, Cal's Brian Bacharach scored the first goal of the game with 2:23 remaining. 49er Brad Scoles quickly retaliated tying the game at one goal a piece with 2:08 on the clock. Scoles scored again with 38 seconds remaining in the period. Marty Matthies tied the game for Cal with a tip in goal from a Jeff Tyrell assist as time expired in the first period.
With 4:00 remaining in the second period Shea Buckner scored the first of his four goals for Cal. Long Beach State's Matt Shafer tied the game up with 3:21 remaining and Matthies gave Cal the lead again on the ensuing possession. The 49ers scored three straight goals, Matt Shafer, Stefan Ludecke and Reid Tomassi to give Long Beach State a two goal lead. Shea Buckner brought Cal back within one goal with seven seconds left in the period and the first half of play ended with Long Beach State leading 6-5.
Long Beach State opened the third period with a goal by Jay Gerardi. Michael Sharf immediately retaliated for Cal, scoring with 5:55 remaining in the period. Joe Sherrin scored a goal for the 49ers with 5:16 remaining in the third period giving Long Beach State a two goal lead. Cal scored four straight goals to close out the third period. Andrija Vasiljevic, Zac Monsees and Shea Buckner (2 goals) scored at 2:59, 2:29, 1:18 and :24 respectively.
In the fourth quarter of play Long Beach State scored two goals tying the game at 10-10 at the end of regulation. Ludecke and Sherrin scored goals for Long Beach State with 4:08 and 2:10 respectively.
In the first overtime the 49er's Gerardi scored his second goal of the game with 54 seconds remaining in the period. Cal's John Mann scored his first goal of the game with 32 seconds remaining in the first overtime period, tying the game at 11-11 going into the second overtime period. Brian Kinsel scored the only goal of the final overtime period, with 58 seconds left in the period, off a John Mann assist.
Cal will next play No. 3 Stanford at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 19 in the Big Splash in Palo Alto, Calif.
