PAC-10 CHALLENGERS: As the Pac-10 schedule gets into full swing this weekend, the Bears will finish off their regular season matches at Hellman with a pair of conference rivals in Arizona State and Arizona, who will make their visits on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Last weekend, Cal took on a trio of Pac-10 squads, and although only Wednesday's 7-0 loss to Stanford counts in the conference standings, the Bears rallied to beat USC, 4-3, after a 5-2 loss to UCLA. The Pac-10 versions of those matches come later this month.

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE: The 11th-ranked Sun Devils (12-5, 2-2 Pac-10) are led by No. 20 Adria Engel and No. 29 Dora Krstulovic, who hold down the top courts for ASU. The pair is also ranked 24th in doubles play for 2002. The last time that Cal met Arizona State, the Sun Devils took a 4-3 heartbreaker from the Bears, on March 9 in Tempe. Cal holds a decisive 25-10 lead in the series.

ABOUT ARIZONA: Arizona is ranked No. 34 in the nation by the ITA, and boasts a 10-8 (2-2 Pac-10) record heading into its Bay Area tour. The Wildcats are led by freshman Maja Mlakar, who has lept out to a No. 13 national ranking. The last time the Bears faced the Wildcats, Cal emerged victorious, with a dominating 6-1 win over the conference rival, only dropping one match the entire day.

LAST WEEK AGAINST STANFORD: The team dropped a tough 7-0 loss to Stanford on Wednesday, losing all of their matches. Cal's Catherine Lynch and Carla Arguelles challenged the Cardinal duo of Tokuda/Tweedie-Yates, with the match going into extra games before the Bears were ultimately defeated, 9-7. Likewise in singles, team captain Christina Fusano and Jieun Jacobs looked to make an early run, with both first sets going into extra games. Jacobs' match came down to a tiebreaker. She then smashed Lauren Barnikow in the second set, 6-1. However, Barnikow went on to win in the third, 6-2.

LAST WEEK AGAINST UCLA: The team gave the visiting Bruins a run for their money on Friday, but were ultimately upended, 5-2. After nearly an hour in rain delay, UCLA dominated the top two doubles courts, doubling up the top pair of pairs, 8-4. Fusano combined with sophomore Nicole Havlicek to hold on for an impressive 9-7 extra games victory over Catherine Hawley and Mariko Fritz-Krockow on court No. 3. In singles, Fusano outplayed UCLA's Petra Marinova at the third spot, winning 6-4, 6-2. Havlicek blew Fritz-Krockow off the sixth court with a dominating performance, taking a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Lynch played a nearly three hour match on the second court, taking Sara Walker to a tie-breaker in the first set and the two constantly one-upped each other on deuces, but Walker ultimately took a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 win from Lynch.

LAST WEEK AGAINST USC: The Bears got things back on track Saturday, upsetting the visiting Trojans, 4-3. As it turned out, everything came down to the doubles point, and USC got things started early there. Things looked bleak for Cal as Lynch and Arguelles were down 1-4, while Raquel Kops-Jones and Jody Scheldt were down 1-6. However, the Bears turned themselves, and perhaps their season, around in a furious comeback. While Kops-Jones and Scheldt could not make it all the way back, Lynch and Arguelles only lost one more game to win the pro-set, 8-5. Coupled with Fusano and Jacobs' win on court two, the Bears were rolling. Scheldt transferred her momentum to the fourth court, blowing Anita Loyola off the pavement, 6-1, 6-2. Fusano took an early lead in her match on court three before finishing off Maureen Diaz, 6-1, 6-3. On court two, Lynch controlled Luana Magnani, oftentimes frustrating the Trojan, before dominating her in the second set, winning 7-5, 6-1.
