BERKELEY, Calif. - California sophomore forward/center Ashley Walker has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Nov. 13-19, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Walker, a native of Modesto, Calif., was named MVP of the Timeout for HIV/AIDS Classic after averaging 21.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 0.5 blocks in a pair of wins over 2006 NCAA Tournament qualifiers. For the weekend, Walker also shot .696 (16-23) from the field and .833 (10-12) from the free throw line.
On Friday, Walker aided the Bears to an 88-60 victory over Florida, posting 17 points and eight rebounds. The win was just the third all-time for Cal over an SEC school. Walker followed that up with a career-high 25 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in only 27 minutes in a 72-54 win against Pepperdine in the championship game on Saturday. It was Walker's first double-double of the season and the ninth of her career.
California (3-0) is one of only two remaining unbeaten Conference teams along with Oregon (2-0). This weekend, the Bears travel to Nashville, Tenn. to take part in the Vanderbilt Tournament where they will face Belmont on Fri., Nov. 24 and then either Vanderbilt or Florida Atlantic on Sat., Nov. 25.
This is the first career Player of the Week award for Walker and the 23rd all-time for California.
