BERKELEY - The No. 24 Golden Bears open the book on the 2011-12 season when they host UC Irvine on Friday, Nov. 11, at Haas Pavilion. Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Mike Montgomery, the California men's basketball team will look to get the inaugural Pac-12 season off to a strong start when it tips off against the Anteaters at 7:30 p.m. PT.
UC Irvine, which hasn't won a season opener since 2007, is coming off a 13-19 mark in 2010-11, and returns just five players from last year's squad. The last time the Bears met the Anteaters, they prevailed, 65-57, in a game at Haas Pavilion. Cal leads the all-time series, 4-2, heading into this Friday's seventh meeting.
The Bears were picked to finish second in the conference by the Pac-12 media, and are coming off an 18-15 season in 2010-11 that saw them advance to the second round of the National Invitational Tournament. Cal returns four starters, led by first-team All-Pac-10 selection and team MVP senior guard Jorge Gutierrez, who paced the squad in scoring with 14.6 ppg.
Fans can listen to the live call of the game on KNEW 910AM with Roxy Bernstein and Todd McKim. The game will also be streamed, live, on CalBears.com All-Access, for a fee.
Admission to the season opener presented by AT&T is free to all Cal students who present a valid ID. The first 1,000 students will receive free food sponsored by the San Francisco Soup Company.
