Fresno - Returning All-American Raquel Kops-Jones continues to re-establish herself as one of college women's tennis brightest stars, winning in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) over Long Beach State University's Laura Thomas yesterday in Fresno. With the win, the top seeded Kops-Jones, who had a bye in the first round, adanced to the round of sixteen, to be played Saturday in Fresno.
Also advancing was second-seeded Christina Fusano, who defeated Pacific's Christina Bathel 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 on Friday.
Carla Arguelles, fifth seeded in the tournament, opened with a bye but dropped her second round match to Fresno State's Ewa Grusiecka, 6-4, 3-6, 2-6. Nicole Havlicek also competed in singles for Cal, dropping a 1-6, 3-6 decision to Pacific's Suzanne Bertel in the second round.
In doubles competition, the doubles pairing of Kops-Jones and Arguelles adcanced to the round of 16, also to be played on Saturday.
