No. 7-ranked California (2-0) defeated No. 16 Clemson (3-2) by a 4-2 score in the first round of the 2008 ITA National Team Indoor Championships at Nielson Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin today. The Golden Bears will move into the quarterfinal round and face No. 3 Northwestern in a 3:30 p.m. CST (1:30 p.m. Pacific) match. The Wildcats have the upper hand over the Bears in tournament seedings as the No. 3 seed, taking out Fresno State in a 4-1 victory today.

Leading 3-2, the Bears needed just one more point to move into the second round and got it from senior Stephanie Kusano as she completed her three-setter with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win on court No. 6 over Clemson's Alexandra Luc. The only other three-set match, on court four was not finished after Cal clinched the team win. No. 31 junior Bojana Bobusic was up 5-3 in the third set when the match was called.

After losing the doubles point, the Bears evened things up quickly as junior Claire Ilcinkas turned away Ina Hadziseimovic on court No. 5 in a 6-4, 6-3 win. Cal took the lead at the conclusion of the next match as freshman Marina Cossou extended her winning streak to ten matches with a 7-5, 6-2 win against No. 84 Carol Salge on court No. 2. Not too long after Cossou completed her bout, senior Cristina Visico turned in a 6-2, 7-6 win over on court No. 3 against Estefania Balda, taking the second set with an 8-6 score in the set tiebreaker.

Ranked No. 10 in the country, senior Susie Babos faced off against No. 4 Ani Mijacika for the second time this year. After defeating Mijacika to win her second consecutive All-American Championship title in October, Babos had her hands full in the rematch, falling in a heartbreaking 11-9 tiebreaker for the first set before ceding the match to her opponent with a 6-4 second set loss.

Opening the day with doubles matches, the No. 36-ranked senior duo of Babos and Kusano defeated the Tigers' top pair of Carol Salge and Federica Van Adrichem in a 9-7 win. Clemson triumphed on the second and third courts, however to claim the doubles point. In defeat, the team of senior Cristina Visico and junior Bojana Bobusic suffered their first loss in five matches together this season.

The Bears' match against the Wildcats can be tracked live on the ITA site beginning at 1:30 Pacific Standard Time. Cal has been to the final match of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships once in 2000 but has never won the team title.
