BERKELEY, CALIF. - Head coach Tom Davidson's University of California men's diving team - juniors Sam Helvie and Brian Lawler, and freshmen Taylor Dehn and Thomas Henninger - will be competing at the 2008 Pac-10 Conference Diving Championships this week at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way, Wash. Helvie, from Bakersfield, Calif., is vying to become the Golden Bears' first Pac-10 champion in men's diving since Joe Styger won both the one-meter and three-meter competition in 1976, and the one-meter competition in 1977. Earlier, he was named Pac-10 Divers of the Month for January, when he captured the one-meter title against both Arizona and Arizona State during the last weekend of January. Against the Wildcats, Helvie scored 346.65 on the one-meter and a 321.60 on the three-meter for second place. Against the Sun Devils, he improved on his one-meter score to record a season-best of 351.52 and placed third on the three-meter with a score of 324.37.
Since then, Helvie won the one-meter board in his hometown, Feb. 7, at Cal State Bakersfield; won the one and three-meter competition at USC Feb. 8; and most recently won both the one and three-meter board at Stanford, Feb. 23. He has won a total of seven competitions this season.
Last year, Helvie was an honorable mention All-American, placing 12th on the one-meter board at the 2007 NCAA Championships. He was also the January 2007 Pac-10 Diver of the Month and was a second-team Pac-10 All-Academic selection. Helvie is the Cal school record-holder in the one-meter (375.92, set in 2006), three-meter (381.15, set in 2007) and platform (279.90, set in 2007) competitions.
