Jan. 23, 2004

Berkeley, CA - The No. 4 California men's swimming team dominated Arizona 169-118 in a meet that was uncontested going into the final races. In all, Cal finished first in 11 of 12 individual events and split the relays Friday afternoon at Spiker Aquatics Complex.

Cal took first and second in the 400 medley relay with the A team (senior Alex Lim, sophomore Ricky Barbosa, sophomore Milorad Cavic, and junior Duje Draganja) finishing in 3:39.45. The B team took second with a 3:40.81 time (senior Jeff Natalizio, junior Caleb Rowe, freshman Patrick O'Neil, and freshman Jonas Tilly). However, Cal ceded first and second place in the 400 free relay to Arizona, although the outcome of the meet had been decided at that time.

Cal featured multiple double-event winners. Lim dominated the backstroke, taking the 100 (55.44) and the 200 (1:57.64). Rowe won both breaststroke events, the 100 (1:02.55) and the 200 (2:14.83). Freshman Daniel Lysaught exhibited great potential taking both the 800 freestyle (8:00.35) and the 400 freestyle (3:54.02). Cavic showed prowess with different stokes, finishing first in the 50 free (21.90) and the 100 butterfly (52.24).

Other event winners included O'Neil in the 200 fly (1:59.27), Draganja in the 100 free (47.50), and junior John Dorr in the 200 individual medley (2:02.67).

On the diving board, junior Louie Gagnet won the three meter with an outstanding 357.6 score but Arizona took second and third in the three meter and swept the one meter dive.

Cal men's swimming hosts No. 13 Arizona State tomorrow at noon before going on the road the remainder of the season.
