STANFORD, Calif. - Cal continued its pursuit of a third straight trip to the NCAA Championship during the first round of action at the NCAA Stanford Regional on Thursday and is in second-place following the first 18 holes of the 54-hole event at the par-70, 6,727-yard Stanford Golf Course. The top five teams from each of six regional events taking place around the country thru Saturday will advance to a 30-team field at the NCAA Championship to be contested May 29 - June 3 at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.

The No. 2 nationally ranked and Pac-12 champion Bears shot a four-under par round of 276 on Thursday that was topped only by the seven-under par 273 by first-round leader San Francisco. Six teams are under par after round one, including host and third-place Stanford (277, -3) one shot behind the Bears. Alabama-Birmingham, Central Florida and Wichita State are tied for fourth another shot back after two-under par rounds of 278.

Michael Kim and Brandon Hagy led the way for the Bears on Thursday and are tied for third place following three-under par opening rounds of 67. The Cal duo is a stroke back of the four-under par rounds shot by co-first-round leaders Sang Yi (LSU) and Zachary Blair (BYU).

Pace Johnson and Max Homa are tied for 40th after first-round one-over par rounds of 71, while Joël Stalter is another shot back in a tie for 47th after a two-over par 72.

The NCAA Stanford Regional will continue Friday and Saturday, with the first tee times each day at 8 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., PT, respectively. Cal will play with San Francisco and Stanford on Friday, with Stalter the first Cal player off the tee at 9:15 a.m. Johnson, Homa, Kim and Hagy are scheduled to follow in 11-minute intervals. Saturday's pairings and tee times will be announced following Friday's action.
