SAN DIEGO - Just one day prior to meeting Texas in the 2011 Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl in San Diego, the Cal football team was welcomed at the U.S. Bank Kickoff Luncheon and by all the Golden Bear fans at the pep rally at the team hotel Tuesday night.
The day began with the head coaches press conference, which was held at The Omni Hotel in downtown San Diego. Cal's Jeff Tedford and Mack Brown of Texas spoke with the media about Wednesday night's tilt at Qualcomm Stadium. A packed room that included 17 video cameras questioned the coaches.
Following the press conference, the scene moved to the San Diego Convention Center for the U.S. Bank Kickoff Luncheon. Right before the luncheon began, Cal and Texas fans were treated to another battle of the bands between the Bears and the Longhorns.
At the luncheon, attendees watched season highlight videos from both teams and listened to words from several speakers, including Tedford and Brown. ESPN sideline reporter Jenn Brown was on hand to interview the head coaches and players sitting at the head table during the event. Representing Cal at the head table were senior captains Mitchell Schwartz, D.J. Holt, Marvin Jones and Trevor Guyton.
Following the luncheon, the Bears enjoyed one last walk-thru at San Diego State University in preparation for Wednesday night's game and had a quick visit to Qualcomm Stadium to get the feel for the venue.
Upon its return to the team hotel, Cal was greeted by Bear fans who had arrived for the game at the pep rally in the hotel. The team got up on stage in one of the hotel ballrooms and Tedford, D.J. Campbell and Mychal Kendricks said a few words to the Cal faithful. The Cal band was also there to help get everybody in the bowl spirit with one of the highlights a group rendition of the song "Bear Territory."
