RENO, Nev. - California opened the 2010-11 season by defeating Nevada, 170-125, in a nonconference dual meet on Friday afternoon at Lombardi Pool. The Golden Bears won nine of 16 events, with senior Katie Kastes claiming the 1000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard breaststroke.

"It was a good place to start," Cal head coach Teri McKeever said. "We had people swimming different events to give us a baseline to see what we need to work on. For many of the women - nine freshmen swimmers, two freshmen divers, Emily Bibb and Katherine Raatz - it was their first time representing Cal, and that's always special. We had a good day."

Kastes was the only Bear who won multiple individual events, though Nevada's Mengjiao Mi captured three races (100, 200 and 500 freestyles) and Wolf Pack diver Grace Huang took both one- and three-meter springboard events.

Cal opened the day by winning the 200-medley relay. The quartet of freshman Cindy Tran, freshman Melissa Bates, senior Amanda Sims and senior Erica Dagg swam to a top time of 1:44.07 for the Bears.

Kastes next posted a time of 10:34.44 to win the 1000 free and later clocked a time of 2:29.19 in the 200 breaststroke.

Four juniors won for the Bears: Shelley Harper in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.46), Colleen Fotsch in the 50 free (24.15), Ursula Dailey in the 100 butterfly (57:10) and Katherine Raatz, a former Arizona Wildcat making her Cal debut, in the 200 butterfly (2:05.30).

Cal freshman Nicole Parmenter won the first individual race of her college career by posting a time of 58:08 in the 100 backstroke. Fellow freshman Stephanie Au edged Nevada's Chavis Thaveesupsoontho, 2:03.48-2:03.81, for first place in the 200 back.

In diving, junior Molly Hayes collected Cal's top marks, finishing fifth at one meter with a score of 248.33 and sixth at three meters with a score of 238.73.

The Bears are back in the pool when they compete at Cal Poly from Sept. 24-25.
