Sept. 19, 2005

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Cal junior Tim Mixon was named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Special Teams Player of the Week as a punt returner in the Bears' 35-20 win against Illinois. Drew Olson of UCLA and linebacker A.J. Tuitele of Oregon received recognition as offensive and defensive players of the week.

It is the second consecutive week that a Cal player has been honored as a player of the week. Last week, sophomore receiver Robert Jordan got the nod.

Mixon, a junior from Compton, Calif., contributed big plays on special teams in California's come-from-behind win against Illinois. Mixon returned two punts for 101 yards, including a 79-yard return for a touchdown. His non-scoring return set up the Cal go-ahead score.

Olson, a senior from Piedmont, Calif., directed UCLA's offense in the Bruins' 41-24 win against No. 18-ranked Oklahoma. Olson completed 28 of 38 passes (.737) for 314 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. The UCLA offense played a turnover-free game against the Sooners. In addition to earning Pac-10 honors, Olson has been named National Player of the Week by The Sporting News.

Tuitele, a sophomore from Wilmington, Calif., played a key role as Oregon held off No. 24-ranked Fresno State 37-34. Tuitele posted a game-high 11 tackles, seven solo, including one tackle for loss.

Others nominated for offensive player of the week honors were quarterbacks Sam Keller of Arizona State, Matt Leinart of USC and Kellen Clemens of Oregon and running backs Justin Forsett of California, Louis Rankin of Washington and Jerome Harrison of Washington State. Also nominated on defense were safeties Dennis Keyes of UCLA and Josh Barrett of Arizona State, linemen Manase Hopoi of Washington, Frostee Rucker of USC and Mkirsto Bruce of Washington State and linebacker Desmond Bishop of California. Nominated for special teams play were punter Danny Baugher of Arizona and kickers Jesse Ainsworth of Arizona State, Mario Danelo of USC and Loren Langley of Washington State.
