Sophomore Graham Ackerman led the eighth-ranked California men's gymnastics team Saturday evening at the Winter Cup Challenge Event Championships, tying for second on the floor with a 9.125. Ackerman landed out of bounds on his very difficult first pass, however finished with a strong double layout dismount at the end.
The Golden Bears were also represented on the high bar by David Eaton, competing as an exhibition-only gymnast.
Brett McClure, Chevron-USOTC, won gold medals on pommel horse (tied) and high bar, plus a silver on parallel bars to complete a very successful weekend in Las Vegas, Nev. Other event winners were: Guillermo Alvarez, Minnesota, Floor Exercise; Josh Landis, Oklahoma, Pommel Horse (tied with McClure); Kevin Tan, Penn State, Rings; Michael Reavis, Iowa, Vault; and Jason Gatson, USOTC-Chevron, Parallel Bars.
Brett McClure has been selected to compete in the Visa American Cup on March 1st in Fairfax, VA. He will join Paul Hamm, Sean Townsend, and Blaine Wilson as the male gymnasts representing the United States in this international competition. In addition, David Durante, Stanford, has been named to the U.S. Men's National Team by the Men's Program Committee. He joins Bhavsar, Gatson, and McCain as the four new team members named this weekend (see headline below). Cal returns to action Friday, Feb. 14, hosting its first of three home meets of the year at Haas Pavilion, taking on cross-bay rival Stanford at 7:30 p.m.
