Women's Water Polo Travel to UC Santa Barbara Tournament

NOTING THE BEARS: In the California women's water polo team's (5-1) last competition they dominated UC Davis, 10-2, Feb. 19 in Davis. In the first six matches of the season, the Bears have outscored their opponents, 56-30. On Feb. 13-16, Cal placed second at the U.S. Senior Nationals in Seattle, WA,, losing 6-5 to the Cal-Davis club team in the championship match. The Cal-Davis club team had four members of the U.S. National Team which competed at the World Championships last month in Perth, Australia, including former Cal athletes Courtney Johnson (1996) and Lynn Wittstock (1985). Club competition does not count on the Bears season record or stats.

HEAD COACH MAUREEN O'TOOLE: Maureen O'Toole is in her third year as Cal's head women's water polo coach with a 67-15 (.817) career record. Last season, O'Toole led her squad to a 30-8 record and a second-place national finished. She was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Northern Division Coach of the Year (in both '96 and '97) and Women's Collegiate I Division Coach of the Year by the American Water Polo Coaches Association in 1996. As a player, O'Toole is a 15-time MVP of the U.S. National Championships, a six-time world MVP and is a four-time national Sportswomen of the Year as named by the U.S. Olympic Committee. She competed this past January at the World Championships in Perth, Australia, along with current Cal player Alisa vonHartitzsch.

NOTING THE UC SANTA BARBARA TOURNAMENT: The UC Santa Barbara Tournament will include 16 teams--UCLA, Cal, Stanford, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, USC, UC Davis, San Diego State, Occidental, UC Santa Cruz, Claremont, Pomona, San Jose State, Long Beach State, Redlands and Loyola Marymount. On Saturday, the Bears will face UC Santa Cruz at 9:10 a.m.; and if victorious, the winner of the USC-Long Beach State match at 1:50 p.m. If Cal is undefeated after Saturday, it will play the winner of the Stanford-Claremont, UC Davis-Redland matches in the semifinals at 11:30 a.m. Sunday and then play in either the championship match at 4:10 p.m. or the third place match at 3 p.m. Last season, the Bears placed third at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament, defeating UC Davis, 10-6, in the third place match. In the tournament's earlier rounds, the Bears defeated USC, 7-3, and blew out Michigan, 18-1, but fell to the Golden West club team, 7-6. CAL PLAYER NOTES: Senior Alisa vonHartitzsch (Tulsa, OK) was dominant at the UC San Diego Invitational Feb. 7-8, scoring 14 goals and leading the Bears in scoring in each of the four tournament matches. VonHartitzsch also had three goals in the victory over UC San Diego Feb. 5 and five goals in the victory over UC Davis Feb. 19. She now has scored 141 goals in less than two years playing at Cal. VonHartitzsch scored six of the Bears seven goals in the victory over Stanford Feb. 8. Last season, she was named first team All-America, Collegiate National Championship MVP, Western Regional Qualifying Tournament Co-MVP and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Northern Division Player of the Year. Junior Kaliya Young (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) paced the Bears with five goals in the season-opening victory over UC San Diego. Another top scorer for Cal was sophomore Colette Glinkowski (Danville, CA), who has scored seven goals already on the season and had three goals in the victory over UC Davis at the UC San Diego Invitational.
