TUCSON, Ariz. - Four scoring innings were enough for No. 1 Arizona to collect an 8-0 victory over No. 4 California Friday night in a shortened five-inning Pac-10 contest before a crowd of 1,833 at Hillenbrand Stadium. The Wildcats' win finished a three-game series sweep of the Bears in regular season play.
Arizona (47-2 overall, 11-1 in the Pac-10) remained poised at the top of the Pac-10 with the win while California (38-11 overall, 5-8 in the Pac-10) dropped its third-straight conference game on the road. Sophomore P Alicia Hollowell improved to 34-1 for Arizona on a four-hit shutout performance, striking out six while stretching her school wins record to 415. Cal's junior P Kelly Anderson (20-8) took the loss.
The Wildcats finished the game in five innings with a run scored on a wild pitch from freshman P Sarah Adams, on in relief for Anderson two-thirds through the fourth. Junior DP Candace Abrams and senior 2B Samantha Quintero walked to lead off the inning, freshman CF Caitlin Lowe drove in Abrams and both she and Quintero moved up on a throw to the plate. Quintero scored on the wild pitch during senior PH Erin Palomarez' at-bat.
UA grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second, an inning that could have been much worse for the Bears. Freshman SS Kristie Fox reached on an error, took second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on junior RF Allyson Von Liechtenstein's hit up the middle. Quintero followed with a single to right and both runners moved up on Cal's second error of the frame. The Wildcats tried to advance on a fielder's choice, but Von Liechtenstein was cut down at the plate on junior 2B Jessica Pamanian's throw home. A groundout back to the circle ended the inning.
Senior C Mackenzie Vandergeest hit her 14th home run of the year, and her second against California pitching, with one out in the third to push Arizona's lead to 2-0.
Cal threatened in the top of the fourth with a walk for junior CF Kaleo Eldredge and an infield single from junior SS Chelsea Spencer that moved Eldredge to third. Spencer stole second to put two Bears in scoring position but Hollowell got a groundout to end the California threat.
A walk by junior RF Crystal Farley and successive singles loaded the bases in the fourth for senior 1B Wendy Allen, who hit into a fielder's choice but Cal's throw to the plate hit Farley and bounced away for an error, allowing two to score. Another fielder's choice and a two-run single made it 6-0. All four runs in the fourth were unearned.
California plays another desert night game Saturday when the Bears take on Arizona State in a two-game weekend series in Tempe. Game time is set for 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
