SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - The No. 2-ranked California men's water polo team (18-4, 4-1), again led by junior All-American John Mann, who tallied three goals for the second match in-a-row, defeated No. 14 UC Santa Barbara (12-14, 0-5), 7-6, Sunday in an MPSF conference match at the Campus Pool in Santa Barbara.

After the Golden Bears' Marty Matthies netting an early goal in the first quarter, the match was evenly fought from that point on. With twenty-four seconds remaining in the first quarter, the Gauchos knotted the score at one when senior Ramiro Saldin notched his first of three goals on the match.

Once again, the Bears struck first in the second period when Mann tallied his first of three goals on the day. The Gauchos Bret DeMuth answered right back to even the score at two. The Gauchos and Bears exchanged goals once more before sophomore Matt Tilburg found the back of the net to give UCSB a 4-3 halftime lead.

The third quarter proved to be the match changer when Cal outscored UCSB 3-1 to take a 6-5 advantage into the fourth quarter. After junior Brian Kinsel got the ball rolling for the Bears in the period, Mann netted his second goal of the match. Saldain put one in the cage for the Gauchos to knot the score at five goals apiece, but with one minute remaining in the third, freshman Shea Buckner put the Bears on top for good by netting a goal.

The first four minutes of the fourth quarter saw very little offense from either squad, but with 2:12 left to play, Mann put Cal up by two goals with his third score. Gaucho freshman driver Miles Price netted a goal to cut the lead to one, but Cal ran the clock out to secure the one-goal victory over UCSB.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rick Wright had a tremendous match in goal for the Gauchos, tallying 16 saves, while Bear goalie Nate Bennett finished with seven saves.

Cal will next host No. 1-ranked USC at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears have lost two, one-goal matches to the Trojans this season, falling 8-7 at the SoCal Open, Sept. 18 in Irvine; and 9-8 in the championship match of the NorCal Open, Oct. 16 at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears will then host Long Beach State on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 12 p.m. in their final home match of the season at Spieker Aquatics.
