Oakland, CA - The No. 7 Golden Bears (4-2) upset the No. 1 Illinois men's gymnastics team at the Pacific Coast Classic, with a score of 219.950. Illinois was second, with a score of 218.850, followed by club teams AA All Stars (202.425), ASU (193.525) and Washington (175.575).
Cal was led by their two seniors, co-captain Graham Ackerman and Jay Yee. Ackerman finished first on floor exercises, tying his career high with a 9.775. Yee performed impressively on both events he competed in, the pommel horse and still rings. Yee set a new career-high with his score of 9.800 on the horse, while his 9.650 on the rings was good for second place.
Freshman Colin Christ turned in a clutch showing, recording a 9.350 on the pommel horse and scoring 9.150 on both the floor exercise and high bar.
Sophomore Jason Pierce set a new personal career record on the high bar, where he finished first on the event with a score of 9.350.
The Bears next compete in Los Angeles at the Peter Vidmar Invitational, Thursday, March 3 at 7 p.m.
