Cal Women's Water Polo Takes Home MPSF Conference Championship

Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, Los Angeles, CA - The No. 3 California women's water polo team (24-4, 12-2 in the MPSF) upset No. 1 USC, 3-2, to win its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference Championship, Sunday.
The Bears were ahead 1-0 at the half, but Lisa Saenz's goal in the third quarter tied the score, 1-1. The Trojans fired in another goal with 3:56 left in the fourth quarter, but Cal answered with a goal soon after. Cal senior Melanie von Hartitzsch notched her second goal of the game with 25 seconds left on the clock to put the Bears on top, 3-2. California closed the victory after USC turned the ball over in the last 15 seconds of the game. The Bears now own a 2-1 season record against the Trojans.
Cal junior Colette Glinkowski was named MPSF All-Conference co-Player of the Year along with USC goalkeeper Bernice Orwig. Cal junior Heather Petri, Glinkowski and von Hartitzsch were also named MPSF All-Tournament First Team, while sophomore Beth Irwin earned Second Team honors.
The Bears next travel to Stockton, CA to compete in the Western Regional National Qualifying Tournament April 23-25.
