Vickers' Three-Run Double Lifts Cal over E. Carolina

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The No. 6/7 California softball team opened play at the Pirate Invitational with wins over Coastal Carolina, 2-1, and East Carolina, 5-4, in Greenville, N.C., Friday.

Against host East Carolina, the Golden Bears (26-2) took the final 5-4 lead on a three-run double from sophomore Katie Vickers in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomores Erika Racklin, Jessica Moore and Chloe Kloezeman all scored on the play.

Freshman Lauren Frankiewicz (9-0) struck out 10 of 24 batters for the win. Senior Kristina Thorson earned her fourth save of the season, pitching two scoreless and hitless innings and striking out five of the six batters she faced.

East Carolina took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, but Cal responded by scoring two runs in the top of the third. The Pirates battled back, going up 4-2 in the bottom of the inning. The score held at 4-2 until the sixth inning, when the Bears put three runs on the board for the final 5-4 lead.

In the top of the third, junior Alex Sutton doubled to center field, sending senior Emily Friedman and freshman Morgan Siegel home. Freidman had reached base on a fielder's choice, while Siegel hit a singe to left field.

In the first game of the day, Cal took an early 1-0 lead against Coastal Carolina. The Bears scored their final run in the top of the sixth. Coastal Carolina (17-14) scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth, avoiding the shut out.

Thorson improved to 17-2 on the season with the win. She struck out nine, while holding Coastal Carolina to one run on three hits.

Senior Haley Woods got things going early for the Bears, knocking a double to right center, which sent Siegel home. Siegel got on base after singling up the middle.

In the sixth inning, Sutton drove Friedman home on a double. Friedman walked to reach base.
