AUSTIN, Texas - California junior Jonas Tilly won the 100-yard freestyle and anchored the winning 400-yard freestyle relay as the Golden Bears took a 128-94 over host Texas and a 155-67 lead over Florida on Friday evening at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. In the morning session of the tri-meet, Tilly won the 50-yard freestyle and anchored two relays wins as the Golden Bears won four out of the first six events. Overall, Cal has won eight of the tri-meet's 12 events.
Cal freshman David Russell won his first individual race of his college career, taking the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:46.28, an NCAA B standard qualifying time, to open the evening. He beat runner-up Caleb McDermott (1:47.20) from Texas and third-place Cal teammate Louis Vayo (1:48.54). Tilly then won the 100 free in an NCAA B qualifying time of 44.44 to edge Darian Townsend (44.73) of Florida. A trio of Cal sophomores - William Copeland (45.19), Garrett Wagner (45.38) and Jernej Godec (45.63) - finished 5-6-7. Cal junior Patrick O'Neil won the 200 butterfly in 1:48.63.
In the Bears' final victory of the night, the Cal A squad - sophomores Joe Whittington, Copeland and Wagner followed by Tilly - won the 400-free relay in an NCAA B qualifying time of 2:59.01 to beat the Texas A team (3:00.98).
Cal junior Daniel Lysaught took second place (15:29.02, NCAA B qualifying time) in the 1650 free and sophomore teammate Dominik Meichtry was third (15:37.28) behind winning Longhorn Michael Kleuh (15:25.32). The Bears also took second and third in the 200 breaststroke, with senior Henrique Barbosa (2:01.17) and junior Graham Lentz (2:01.55) trailing Christian Schnurr of Texas (2:00.39).
Bears freshman Sam Helvie scored 224.05 points in an exhibition platform diving competition.
On Friday morning, the Bears opened the meet by winning the 200-free relay in an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:20.36. Whittington led off for Cal followed by Copeland and Godec, while Tilly swam a split of 19.44 to clinch the victory. Tilly later won the 50 free in a time of 20.37, while Godec was third (20.69). Tilly, a product of Trelleborg, Sweden, closed the morning session by anchoring the winning 400-medley relay (3:16.94, NCAA B qualifying time).
Cal senior Miguel Molina won the 200 individual medley (1:48.99, NCAA B qualifying time) and Meichtry had Cal's best finish in the 500 free, taking second (4:28.39). Lysaught was fifth in the 500 (4:29.94).
The final session of the tri-meet begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT.
