The University of California women's swimming team (1-1) suffered its first defeat of the season at the University of Georgia, 163-129, Friday evening at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga.
The Golden Bears were led by junior Natalie Coughlin's three victories. Coughlin posted NCAA automatic qualifying times in each victory, including the 100 back (53.62), 100 free (48.06) and 100 fly (51.90).
Other wins for the Bears included junior Natalie Griffith's victory in the 200 IM (2:04.94) and the 400 free relay (3:29.03) team of junior Danielle Becks, freshman Cheryl Anne Bingaman, senior Michelle Harper and sophomore Keiko Amano.
Senior Staciana Stitts finished in second place in the 100 (1:02.50) and 200 breast (2:16.53) and 200 IM (2:06.30). Freshmen Helen Silver and Ashley Chandler also posted runner-up finishes, with Silver placing second in the 200 back (2:03.15) and Chandler in the 500 free (4:59.49).
Diver Christina Flynn placed second in both the one-meter and three-meter competitions, scoring 250.05 and 265.95 respectively.
Cal is back in action against Clemson at Gabrielsen Natatorium Saturday at 12 p.m.
