TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 6 California shot a nine-over 293 Wednesday to finish fourth at the Wildcat Invitational with a 54-hole total of plus-32 884. No. 11 Vanderbilt claimed the title at plus-17 869 following a round of 290.
No. 10 Ohio State grabbed second at 873 on the strength of a 289 final round, and No. 2 UCLA took third at 874.
Cal sophomore Sophia Sheridan fired a one-over 72 and concluded the tournament in second place at minus-one 212. The product of Guadalajara, Mexico tied senior teammate Sarah Huarte's 54-hole school record set in the fall of 2003 at the Stanford-Pepsi Intercollegiate.
Vanderbilt's May Wood, who began the day tied for first with Sheridan and Ohio State's Allison Hanna, won the individual crown by three shots after shooting a 69 Wednesday. Wood and Sheridan were the only golfers to end the 14-team tournament below par. Hanna was third at 214.
Huarte cared a final round of 73, tying for eighth at 219. Senior Claire Dury tied for 20th for the Bears at 226, firing a personal low round in Arizona of 74. Senior Anna Temple shot a 74 for her best round of the tournament to tie sophomore teammate Sofie Andersson for 37th at 231. Freshman Danielle Nash competed as an individual and tied for 68th at 252.
Cal returns to action Tuesday-Wednesday, March 2-3 at the Spartan Invitational in Salinas, Calif.
