BERKELEY - Joe Shipp, a 6-5 forward from Fairfax High School in Los Angeles, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball at Cal, head coach Ben Braun announced Thursday.

A first team all-state player, Shipp averaged 27.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg and 3.0 apg during his senior season. Shipp was also named league and team MVP and was a two-time all-city selection. His best game came against Los Angeles High School when he scored a career-high 44 points.

Rated the No. 7 small forward in the country by FastBreak magazine, Shipp was one of 50 players invited to try out for the U.S. Junior National team in Colorado Springs in 1998.

Shipp is the fourth player to sign with Cal for next season, joining guards ShanTay Legans (Goleta, CA/Dos Pueblos HS) and Brian Wethers (Murietta, CA/Murietta Valley HS) and center Nick Vander Laan (Sacramento, CA/St. Thomas More Academy (CT)). Cal has one more scholarship available to offer.
