COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Three members of the California men's swimming program - junior sprint freestyler Nathan Adrian, senior breaststroker Sean Mahoney and head coach David Durden - will be part of the U.S. team that will compete at the 2009 Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool Dec. 18-19 at the Manchester Aquatic Center in Manchester, England, USA Swimming announced Wednesday, Oct. 28.

The bi-annual Duel in the Pool is a made-for-TV event, designed to showcase the sport's top swimmers. This year's Duel takes on a new format with Team USA facing a team comprised of the top swimmers from Great Britain, Germany and Italy. Athletes will be awarded for world records, and wins, with world records commanding up to a $15,000 bonus and gold medal winners earning $1,000.

Adrian has the second-fastest U.S. times in the 50 (21.46 at World Championships) and 100-meter (48.00 at World Championship Trials) freestyle. He swam the anchor leg (46.79) of the United States' July 26 gold medal-winning 400-meter free relay at the 2009 FINA World Championships in Rome. Adrian also placed sixth in the finals of the 50-meter free (21.49) at the World Championships, and earlier had captured both the 50 and 100-meter freestyle at the ConocoPhillips National Championships, July 9-10, in Indianapolis.

Mahoney owns the United States' second-fastest time in the 200-meter breaststroke with a mark of 2:09.70, swam at the World University Games. He placed fifth in the 200-meter breast final July 8 at the World University Games with a mark of 2:11.82. This past March at the NCAA championships, Mahoney had placed second nationally in the 200-yard breast with a time of 1:52.34. He had set an NCAA record in the event with a 1:51.96 in the morning prelims.

Durden is in his third season directing the Cal men's swimming and diving program, owning a 13-4 (.765) dual meet record with back-to-back Pac-10 second-place finishes at the conference meet and two fourth-place finishes at the NCAA championships. Durden joined the Golden Bears in 2007 and has coached 16 All-Americans at Cal, including 2009 NCAA champions Adrian (50 and 100 free) and Damir Dugonjic (100 breast), plus 2009 NCAA runner-ups - Mahoney (200 breast), David Russell (100 back) and the 200 and 400 medley relays.

The U.S. team for the Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool is comprised of the fastest swimmers selected from four meets in 2009 - the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships, Word University Games, U.S. Open and FINA World Championships. The European Select Team will be comprised of up to 18 men and 18 women from Great Britain, Germany and Italy, with each country sending a team of six men and six women.

This is the fourth Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool in the history of USA Swimming. Past Duels were held in 2003, 2005 and 2007 and pit all-star teams from the U.S. and Australia against each other. The U.S. is 3-0 in the history of the Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool. For more information about this year's Duel, visit duelinthepool.com.
