STANFORD, Calif. - No. 6 California fell to No. 3 Stanford, 5-2, Saturday in the regular-season finale for both teams with a share of the Pac-10 title on the line at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Golden Bears dropped to 16-5 overall (6-2 Pac-10), while the Cardinal improved to 19-4 and tied for the conference title with UCLA at 7-1.

In February, Cal downed Stanford, 6-1, in Berkeley. The Bears, which lost for just the second time in 12 matches, and Stanford were engaged in an intense battle all day today.

Unlike the meeting in Berkeley, the Cardinal grabbed the doubles point by winning two of three matches. No. 12 Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette from Stanford defeated No. 18 Susie Babos and Stephanie Kusano at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. On the No. 2 court, Whitney Deason and Jessica Nguyen beat Cal's Claire Ilcinkas and Marina Cossou, 8-2.

Cal's No. 3 doubles team of Bojana Bosusic and Christina Visico claimed a 7-6 victory over Celia Durkin and Carolyn McVeigh.

Four of the six singles matches went to three sets. Singles play featured some of the best players in the nation, as 11 of the 12 players were ranked among the top 105, including four in the top 20. Stanford's No. 7 Hilary Barte opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over No. 6 Cossou on the No. 1 court.

On court five, No. 104 Bobusic put the Bears on the board with a straight-set win (6-3, 7-6) over No. 58 Deason. Bobusic also earned a straight-set singles win against Sacramento State on Friday.

No. 98 Celia Durkin from Stanford upset No. 38 Visico at the No. 3 spot, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. No. 100 Burdette clinched the win for Stanford by holding off No. 70 Ilcinkas at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

No. 14 Nguyen from Stanford also rallied from a set down on the No. 2 court to defeat No. 18 Babos, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. The match concluded on court six with Cal's Kusano upsetting No. 78 McVeigh, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, for her second singles win of the weekend.

Cal returns to action at the Pac-10 Championships April 24-27 in Ojai, Calif.
