The California Golden Bears earned a 60-47 victory on the road over the Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis on Thursday night. DeNesha Stallworth led the Bears with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Talia Caldwell also had a double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Cal jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead. After the Bears turned the ball over on three straight possessions, the Beavers took advantage of the opportunity at the opposite end of the court, going up 7-5. It was the last time the Beavers would lead in the game. Cal, led by six second-chance points by sophomore center Talia Caldwell, went on a 12-2 run to take a 17-9 lead. The Bears closed out the half on a 13-5 run to take a 30-16 advantage into halftime.
The Bears stifling defense held the Beavers to just five field goals in the first half, including keeping the Beavers from making a basket for a span of nine minutes and 21 seconds in the middle of the first period.
The second half was much more even with the Bears and Beavers trading baskets for the first ten minutes of the half, Cal holding a 43-30 lead at the midway point of the period. Cal extended their lead to 50-32 on three straight baskets from their freshmen. Afure Jemerigbe cut inside to free herself up for a layup. She then forced a turnover and zoomed back for a fast break layup. After another Oregon State turnover, Mikayla Lyles drained a three to put Cal up by 18 with just under seven minutes to play.
Oregon State's Alyssa Martin hit a pair of jumpers to fuel and Oregon State run with the Beavers pulling within 11, 56-45 with three minutes to play. Cal's defense helped them close out the game with the Bears getting offensive rebounds off missed free throws to retain possession and keep the ball out of the Beavers' offensive zone and hold on for the victory.
Cal faced a Beaver 2-3 zone most of the evening. The Bears found ways to penetrate the zone and get the ball down into the low post with 42 of their 60 points coming in the paint.
The Bears outrebounded the Beavers 50-29. Cal had 26 offensive rebounds in the game, turning them into 29 second-chance points.
"We'll take the win," said head coach Joanne Boyle. "We didn't have a good weekend up this way a couple of weeks ago.We've really been doing a good job taking care of business at home. The team was really excited to get back on the road and prove they can win on the road. And they did the little things that got us a win tonight."
Talia Caldwell had her fourth double double of the season with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Caldwell nearly had a double double in the first half where she scored 10 points with 9 rebounds. Caldwell also had 2 blocks and three assists. DeNesha Stallworth scored 16 points with 10 rebounds for her seventh double double of the season. Layshia Clarendon had 11 points with 8 rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
With the victory, Cal improves to 12-7 and 4-4 in the Pac-10. Oregon State falls to 7-12 and 0-8 in the Pac-10.
Cal continues on their trip through the Beaver State, taking on the Oregon Ducks on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 12:30 pm.
