ANNAPOLIS, M.D. -
The 2006 National Champion Cal men's water polo team kicked off its 2007 season with an 11-7 victory over Bucknell in the Navy Open early Saturday afternoon. Although the Bisons outscored the Golden Bears in the first quarter, 3-2, Cal put up seven goals in the second quarter to build a first-half lead which Bucknell could not overcome.
"This was an up and down game for us," Cal head coach Kirk Everist said. "We had a very solid second period, but we need to sustain our effort more as the tournament and season move forward."
After being outscored in the first quarter by the Bisons, the Golden Bears came back with a vengeance, scoring seven goals to Bucknell's one. Coming out of the half with a 11-4 halftime lead, the Bears controlled the third period with two goals of their own and shutting out the Bison offense. The tables turned in the final period when the Bisons scored three unanswered goals, but it was not enough to take the game and Cal emerged victorious, 11-7.
On man advantages, the Bears went 5-for-7 on offense and 2-for-5 on defense. Senior Michael Sharf led the Bears with three goals while Frank Reynolds and Jeff Tyrell paced the squad with three assists while Spencer Warden contributed a team-high five setals. Cal goalies split time between the posts with Marc Vacquier notching three saves and Jacob MacIntosh with five saves and three assists.
Next up, the Bears will play tournament-host Navy at 7:40 p.m. E.S.T. Saturday.
